The Texan founder of Curves may be heavily Christian and donate to antiabortion groups, but the other politics - that of providing a haven of female empowerment and social consciousness - is what attracts people to Curves. Most of the franchises are run by women who are first-time business owners. Most gyms are meat markets for the city's beautiful people, and the average, middle aged woman just doesn't feel comfortable there. Curves caters to this demographic. No men, no mirrors, no meat.
