In 1922, the Boston Chamber of Commerce authorized the development of an aircraft landing site near Jeffries Point, covering the areas previously known as Governer's Island and Apple Island. Originally it was called Boston Airport, with cinder runways on 189 acres, and its first commercial hangar was built in 1925. It was expanded over time as demand for air travel increased. In 1941, the airport came under the control of the state, and the Department of Public Works proceeded to fill in the harbor, build new hangars and roads. In 1943 it was renamed the General Edward Lawrence Logan Airport after a man who had a long and distinguished military career, but ironically never flew. In 1955 an eight-story control tower was constructed (now the Old Tower, since a 22-story control tower was built in the 70's). Massport was created a few years later to manage its growth, operation and improvements. Kidport, the nation's first airport play area, was designed by The Children's Museum of Boston in 1987. Today the airport ranks 20th in the nation in passenger volume.
