Over the years, it has been bypassed with the addition of tunnels and the subway, but a lot of traffic still flows through the area and it can get pretty noisy. It has the reputation of being crowded and crime-ridden with public housing units, despite major improvements and revitalization efforts. Which isn't to say there aren't any good points. The East Boston Piers Park is right off Maverick Square. It's a beautiful location, partly on land and partly on the pier overlooking the scenic Harbor.

Today, it's informally known as "Little Salvador", and a quick glance at the storefronts along Maverick Square will show you that the population is indeed heavily Spanish-speaking in composition. Convenience stores, laundromats and furniture stores all advertises with Spanish-language signs and the Salvadoran flag hangs in many windows. An eclectic neighborhood and friendly people just about wherever you go.
